Porter (Class A CDL Required)

Job Summary

Responsible for providing flexible driving support across the fleet to meet operational needs. The Utility Driver operates commercial vehicles to cover driver absences, support new customer start-ups, assist with equipment repositioning, and ensure on-time service to customers. This position plays a key role in maintaining service reliability and promoting the company’s commitment to safety and professionalism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides driving coverage for local, regional, or dedicated routes as assigned.
  • Operates company tractors and trailers in compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and company safety policies.
  • Transports freight, empty equipment, or supplies between terminals, customer locations, and maintenance facilities.
  • Assists with new account start-ups by temporarily supporting assigned lanes or customers until permanent drivers are placed.
  • Repositions equipment (trailers, tractors, or other assets) as needed to support operations and maximize fleet efficiency.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with federal and company standards.
  • Reports any mechanical issues, safety hazards, or incidents immediately to supervision.
  • Maintains accurate driver logs, trip reports, and documentation using electronic logging devices (ELDs) or required systems.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service and professionalism when interacting with clients and team members.
  • Assists in yard moves, trailer spotting, or shuttle duties as required by operations.
  • May assist in driver training, mentoring, or performance observation as assigned by the Operations Manager.
  • Follows all safety protocols, including PPE requirements, defensive driving practices, and cargo securement standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 2 years of verifiable commercial driving experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of DOT, FMCSA, and company safety regulations.
  • Ability to adapt to varying routes, schedules, and customer needs on short notice.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Professional demeanor with strong customer service focus.
  • Ability to operate various types of tractor-trailer combinations, including dry van and refrigerated equipment.
  • Must meet all company and federal physical requirements and pass a DOT medical exam and drug screen.
